Abstract
Intravenous sedation prior to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is widely used. However, a paradoxical reaction to a sedative, with the development of emotional lability, agitation, and even range instead of a calming effect, occurs in as many as 29% of patients. These endoscopy related complications are usually ignored with few attempts to prevent them. We describe the case of a woman who ingested the tongue depressor portion of a mouthpiece during sedated upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The foreign body was found 10 days after first endoscopic examination, which was successfully removed by endoscopic techniques.
